Leadership Transition: What You Need to Know to Succeed
Thursday July 16, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
Leadership transitions — whether stepping into a new role, handing off responsibilities, or adjusting to organizational change — are some of the most challenging and formative moments in a leader's journey. This session blends teaching and open discussion to help Legal Aid NY leaders across all roles think through what it takes to transition well: into a role, out of a role, or through periods of organizational change. Participants will explore practical frameworks alongside real conversation about the uncertainties, opportunities, and responsibilities that come with leadership transitions.
Session Goals
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Understand common stages of leadership transition — recognizing the emotional and practical phases leaders move through (uncertainty, adjustment, ownership, growth).
  2. Identify what makes transitions succeed or stall — including clarity of expectations, trust-building, and communication gaps that often derail new leaders.
  3. Reflect on their own transition experiences — past or upcoming — and name specific challenges or fears they're carrying into this moment.
  4. Learn practical strategies for transitioning well, such as:
    • Building credibility early without overcorrecting
    • Honoring what came before while establishing your own leadership voice
    • Setting expectations with your team and your own leadership
    • Managing the discomfort of not having all the answers yet
  5. Discuss how to support others in transition — whether mentoring a new leader, stepping back from a role, or helping a team adjust to new leadership.
  6. Leave with one concrete action to apply to a transition they're currently facing or anticipating.

Leadership Goal Setting for Individual Impact
Thursday July 16, 2026 4:00pm - 5:00pm EDT
Strong leaders measure success and significance not only by their own achievements but by the growth, engagement, and performance of their teams. This session explores how leaders must be intentional in goal setting in order to cultivate a positive and lasting impact on employees while advancing their individual growth as a leader.  While centered on the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) goal-setting framework, this session will recognize the value of diverse perspectives. The session highlights the significant evolution of representation for women and minorities in leadership roles.  Participants will learn to translate their broad leadership intentions into clear, actionable goals that deliver measurable growth outcomes. Through targeted self-reflection, interactive discussions, and practical exercises, attendees will discover strategies needed to help them evolve as a leader who purposefully attends to the space between intention and impact. Finally, leaders will build robust action plans that foster significance.
